CLACKAMAS Ore. — Some feisty rainbow trout are ready for a fight with anglers in the Beaverton area this weekend as the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife hosts a free family fishing event at Commonwealth Lake on Saturday, May 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
ODFW will release hundreds of trout, including some 1-2 pound “trophy trout,” to lure families interested in learning about trout fishing. The lake is located within Commonwealth Lake Park at SW Foothill and SW Huntingon in Beaverton.
“It’s been a few years since we’ve been to Commonwealth Lake for a family fishing event, and it’s good to be back,” said Jeff Fulop, ODFW family fishing event coordinator.
In addition to lots of fish, ODFW will provide rods, reels and tackle and bait, on a first-come first-served basis to those who want to test the waters of trout fishing. People are welcome to bring their own fishing gear if they prefer but are not required to do so. Staff and volunteer fishing instructors will be on site to answer questions and demonstrate effective fishing techniques.
The event is free and open to the public, and no pre-registration is required, although some people will need fishing licenses to participate. Anglers 11 years old and younger do not need a fishing license. Anglers 12-17 years of age will need a youth license, which can be purchased for $10 at any ODFW license agent, ODFW office or on-line at ODFW’s website. Everybody else must have an adult fishing license. Licenses will not be sold at the event so individuals planning to participate should obtain their licenses ahead of time.
Commonwealth Lake is a 3-acre waterbody managed by Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District and is one of more than 350 places in Oregon that ODFW regularly stocks with catchable hatchery trout. Amenities near the lake include ADA accessible trail, picnic tables, playground and restrooms. In addition to rainbow trout, Commonwealth has populations of bass, bluegill and crappie.
