SALEM, Ore.—ODFW will co-host a waterfowl hunting practice event Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2 with Cabela’s and Mid-Valley Clays at their facility located at 6181 Concomly Road NE, Gervais.
Visitors can try a variety of waterfowl hunting scenarios on both days (from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday). Both new and experienced waterfowl hunters are welcome and the minimum age requirement to participate is 9 years old. No pre-registration is required but trying a scenario costs $10, payable to Mid-Valley Clays which will be running the scenarios and monitoring safety. ODFW will be on hand to loan firearms to people without one and to display some common waterfowl decoy set-ups.
The three practice simulations follow, each includes 24 targets:
- The Layout Blind: Two hunters using a layout blind. Both you and another hunter will enter the layout blinds and have a chance to shoot at clays designed to mimic real layout blind activity. This is your chance to try some techniques and equipment that you might consider using in your own hunting area.
- The Goose Ground Blind: Two hunters will enter a ground blind with a goose layout in front of them. You will have an opportunity to shoot at clays coming in like geese.
- The Duck Ground Blind: Two hunters will enter a ground blind sitting over a lifelike pond. You will have an opportunity to shoot at real duck scenarios using clay targets. At the Duck Ground Blind there will also be bird scented retrieving dummies for your dog to do blind searches. Dogs must be under control and leashed at all times prior to the simulation.
Mid-Valley Clays will allow only factory ammunition; no reloads allowed. Ammo can be purchased at the event (lead ammo only, max size of shot is 7.5). No alcohol allowed and all guns should be unloaded, actions open, safety on and cased until it is your turn to shoot.
Cabela’s is providing door prizes. Anyone who tries one of the scenarios will be entered to win. Prizes will be drawn on Sunday; you do not need to be present to win.

Western Oregon’s duck season (Zone 1) opens Oct. 15. Goose seasons also open in October.
