CENTRAL POINT, Ore – Come see live Chinook salmon tomorrow, October 1 at the Bear Creek Salmon Festival in Ashland’s North Mountain Park Nature Center, 620 N Mountain Ave. The event runs 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
ODFW’s Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) biologist Ryan Battleson will have live Chinook and coho salmon, steelhead and trout for visitors to see.
“People can see these fish that call Bear Creek home up close and personal. It’s a great way to learn about local watershed stewardship that residents can participate in,” Battleson said.
ODFW’s Angler Education Trailer will be at the event with STEP volunteers form the Middle Rogue Steelheaders and Rogue Flyfishers teaching water safety, fly tying, knot tying, and giving fly and spin casting demonstrations.
“We are in our twelfth year of the Bear Creek Salmon Festival and this year’s theme is ‘Stewardship Flows Downhill.’ All ages can enjoy interactive exhibits focusing on improving fish and wildlife habitat in the Rogue Valley, watch a Native American salmon cooking demonstration, listen to a salmon story, or run through a massive salmon spiral labyrinth,” said Linda Chesney, North Mountain Park Stewardship Coordinator.
The zero waste event also features live music and a food truck. Check the Bear Creek Salmon Festival website for more information, and click here to learn about Rogue Valley STEP.
