ODFW family fishing events kick off April 1 at Canby Pond

March 27, 2017

CLACKAMAS, Ore. — Anglers and would-be anglers of all ages are invited to Canby Pond on Saturday, April 1 for the first of 28 family trout fishing events that will take place at locations across Oregon in 2017, compliments of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).

This free event is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. To bolster the odds of catching fish, ODFW will release hundreds of rainbow trout, including “pounders,” into the pond just prior to the event. In addition, ODFW staff and volunteer instructors will be on location to set people up with rods, reels, tackle, and bait and to provide instruction as needed. Pre-registration is not required.

“This is always a popular event and a fun start to the spring trout fishing season,” said Jeff Fulop, ODFW biologist in charge of the event. “We want to make it as fun and easy as possible by providing everything an inexperienced angler needs to be successful – lots of hard-fighting fish, plenty of equipment and bait, and experienced instructors who can demonstrate effective fishing techniques.”

Canby Pond has been designated as a youth-only and angler with disabilities fishing venue. As such, it is open to youngsters ages 17 and under as well as persons with disabilities who possess a current Oregon Disabilities Hunting and Fishing License. Under the 2017 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, kids do not need a fishing license until the age of 12. Those 12-17 must have a youth license in possession, which can be purchased for $10 at any ODFW field office, license agent or online at the ODFW website. Licenses will not be issued at the event and must be purchased ahead of time.

Canby Pond is a one-acre pond located at Canby Community Park in the southwest portion of Canby. Access the park by traveling south from Hwy. 99E on SW Berg Parkway. In addition to trout, the pond contains largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill.

For a complete list of Family Fishing Events check out the online schedule on ODFW’s website. Canby Pond is one of 350 water bodies in Oregon that ODFW regularly stocks with hatchery trout. Persons who are unable to participate in the Canby youth fishing event can explore many other fishing opportunities, stocking schedules and locations at ODFW’s website, www.odfw.com, under the “Fishing” tab.
