CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Columbia River fishery managers announced today that retention of adult Chinook from the Astoria-Megler Bridge upstream to Bonneville Dam will close effective Saturday July 1. The area downstream of the Megler Bridge is closed through July under permanent regulations.
The 2,660 adult summer Chinook allocation for this fishery was met earlier than anticipated due to higher-than-expected catch and mark rates. Retention of hatchery Chinook jacks (12-24 inches), hatchery steelhead, and sockeye remains open through July 31.
Only sockeye and hatchery steelhead may be retained as part of the adult bag limit once adult Chinook retention closes Saturday. The daily adult bag limit will remain at two fish but may not include more than one hatchery steelhead. Anglers are reminded that all sockeye are considered adults in the daily limit and must be recorded as adults on the combined angling tag.
“The recreational summer Chinook allocation reserved for this fishery was limited based on the preseason forecast,” according to John North, ODFW Columbia River fisheries manager. “We needed to take this action to avoid affecting upriver fisheries. A run update is anticipated next week, which could potentially provide for additional opportunity if the return is upgraded enough”.
