Snake River closes to retention of wild fall Chinook as of Oct. 5, remains open for hatchery fish

October 3, 2019

ENTERPRISE, Ore. – Retention of wild fall Chinook will be closed in the Snake River from the state line with Washington to Hells Canyon Dam beginning Oct. 5, 2019. Harvest of hatchery fall Chinook will remain open.

The closure was prompted for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington by high harvest rates. While impact levels have not been fully met, discontinuing wild Chinook retention allows the states to maintain a wild fish impact buffer that allows continued harvest of hatchery fall Chinook.

The regulations will be as follows:

  • Through Oct. 31, 2019, or until further notice, the Snake River from the Oregon-Washington border upstream to the deadline below Hells Canyon Dam is open to fall Chinook fishing.
  • Effective Nov. 1 through Nov. 17, 2019, or until further notice, the Snake River from Cliff Mountain Rapids (RM 246.7, 1.1 miles below Hells Canyon Dam) upstream to the deadline below Hells Canyon Dam will remain open to fall Chinook fishing.
  • The daily bag limit is six (6) adult hatchery fall Chinook per day; with no daily, possession, or season limits on marked or un-marked jack salmon (less than or equal to 24 inches in length). Anglers must cease fishing for salmon for the day when they retain six (6) salmon (non-jack). Retention of wild fall salmon is prohibited.

Only barbless hooks may be used on this stretch of the Snake River, and anglers should consult the 2019 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations for other rules that may apply.
