Snake River daily Chinook bag limit reduction takes effect Oct. 19

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

SALEM, Ore. – Effective 12:01 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 the daily bag limit for anglers fishing under an Oregon license in the Snake River will be two adult hatchery Chinook per day. This is reduced from the earlier allowance of up to six hatchery Chinook per day.

The Commission directed ODFW to take the action to reduce catch-and-release mortality of wild salmonids in the area.

The fishery remains open to retention of hatchery Chinook through previously announced dates or until allowable Endangered Species Act (ESA) impacts for the fishery are reached, whichever comes first.

The Chinook regulations are as follows:

  • Through Oct. 31, 2019, or until further notice, the entire area of the Snake River from the Oregon-Washington border upstream to the deadline below Hells Canyon Dam is open for hatchery Chinook.
  • Effective Nov. 1 through Nov. 17, 2019, or until further notice, the Snake River from Cliff Mountain Rapids (about 1.1 miles downstream of Hells Canyon Dam) upstream to the deadline below Hells Canyon Dam will be open for hatchery Chinook.
  • The daily bag limit from Oct. 19 onward is two (2) adult hatchery fall Chinook per day; with no daily, possession, or season limits on marked or un-marked jack salmon (less than or equal to 24 inches in length). Anglers must cease fishing for salmon for the day when they retain 2 adult salmon. ;Retention of adult wild salmon is prohibited.

Only barbless hooks may be used on this stretch of the Snake River and anglers should consult the 2019 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations for other rules that may apply.
