Tri-state governors, British Columbia Premier support building resilience to ocean changes, author joint opinion editorial

Monday, November 8, 2021

NEWPORT, Ore – “There can be no action to fight climate change and limit its impacts without including the ocean,” say the governors of Oregon, Washington, California, and the Premier of British Columbia in a joint opinion editorial released today.

Governor Kate Brown, along with Governor Jay Inslee (Washington), Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis (California), and Premier John Horgan (Province of British Columbia) authored the piece together under their long-standing Pacific Coast Collaborative.

In addition to taking joint action on ocean change through Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia (OAH) Action Plans, the collaborative seeks to advance climate policies, build clean energy economy and infrastructure, and increase resilience to presently occurring climate change impacts. Oregon’s OAH Action Plan was adopted in 2019.

These jurisdictions participated in a special issue of the Coastal Management Journal focused on ocean acidification, including one article on Oregon’s progress in combatting the effects of ocean change.
