Manulife (formerly Hancock) Forest Management Lands in northeast Oregon closed as of Aug. 3 due to fire danger

Update Sept. 12, 2022

Fire danger and restrictions remain status quo as of today in NE Oregon. There are still thousands of acres burning and conditions remain dry. Manulife properties remain closed to all public access. Oregon Dept of Forestry is monitoring conditions each day and ODFW will issue a news release when the status of Manulife access changes. Find and/or subscribe to news releases here

Update Sept. 6, 2022

Manulife Forest Management (formally Hancock) properties to remain closed this week.  Fire Managers expect significant growth on all fires this week due to a Red Flag Warning for wind, low humidity and weather volatility early this week.  A substantial, widespread rain event is needed to improve conditions.  Access will be re-evaluated Monday of each week or after a substantial rain event. For additional information regarding Manulife lands, please call the Manulife Information/Recreation line at (541) 962-2184.

UPDATE Aug. 29, 2022

With triple digit temps and no rain on the extended forecast, ODF predicts fire danger will spike toward the end of the week. Moderating temps are in the forecast the following week when access will be revisited.

UPDATE Aug. 23, 2022

Manulife properties in northeast Oregon will remain closed to all public access through at least the opening weekend of archery season, unfortunately, due to volatile weather in the area. Yesterday there were nearly 300 lightning strikes in NE Oregon and firefighters are working to keep fires that started contained. Closures are re-evaluated each Monday morning by Oregon Dept of Forestry, or after a major rainfall. ODFW will continue to keep this page updated with new information and announce any reopening via news release.

August 2, 2022

LA GRANDE, Ore.—All Manulife Forest Management lands in northeast Oregon will be closed to all public access beginning Aug. 3 at 12:01 a.m. due to fire danger.

The restrictions impact Manulife Forest Management properties in the Shamrock, Whiskey Cr, Noregaard, Little Catherine Cr, Meacham Travel Management Areas and any other Hancock properties enrolled in the Access and Habitat program throughout northeast Oregon.

With fire season underway, hunters and other outdoor recreationists are reminded to check for access and fire restrictions before heading out. Common restrictions are:

  • Smoking and off-road driving prohibited.
  • Vehicles are required to carry a gallon of water or fully charged 2.5 pound fire extinguisher and shovel when off state highway or county roads. ATVs must have a fire extinguisher.
  • Campfires are restricted or prohibited.
  • Private timberlands normally open may be closed to all access or have travel restrictions.

The Oregon Department of Forestry public fire restrictions map is a good source of info,

"Know before you go" and check with the land manager where you are headed (such as the U.S. Forest Service or private lands that allow some access) for fire restrictions and closures before heading out.
