ROSEBURG, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for a volunteer site host at the Millicoma Interpretive Center (MIC) and winter steelhead acclimation site. The site is located 24 miles from Coos Bay on West Fork Road in Allegany along the West Fork Millicoma River.
Site hosts assist ODFW biologists in winter steelhead brood stock collection, monitoring the fish trap, fish rearing (feeding fish and cleaning rearing troughs), light maintenance on the site, and interacting with steelhead anglers and the public.
At MIC, biologists and volunteers spawn steelhead, rear fall Chinook juveniles, and fin clip juvenile hatchery Chinook with the help of many local school classes that come to learn about salmon and steelhead.
The position is available now and is year-round; the majority of duties occur from December through the end of May. While start dates are flexible, preference is given to candidates that can start by February. Top candidates must pass a fingerprint based criminal history check, a driver’s record check and other requirements including following ODFW policies and procedures.
Hosts must have their own RV. ODFW provides water, septic, 30-amp electric hookup, restroom/shower, washer/dryer, limited freezer space, and a phone line is available. There is no cell phone service within 15 miles of the MIC.
Interested applicants should contact Gary Vonderohe at 541-857-2392 or gary.r.vonderohe@odfw.oregon.gov
