FISH AND WILDLIFE COMMISSION TOUR
9:00 Meet at “Resort at the Mountain”, Welcome and Introductions

9:30 Tour departs, travel to Mt. Hood
10:00 Remote wildlife trapping technology and the Mt. Hood elk habitat use study

Demonstrate the use of new technology that allows the remote monitoring and operation of wildlife traps.  Discuss the results of the Mt. Hood elk habitat use study made possible by this adaptation of commercially available camera and cell phone technology.

10:40 Depart Mt. Hood, travel to Zigzag River
11:00 Zigzag River temporary weir and trap.

Discuss and demonstrate the use of temporary weirs and traps in the upper Sandy River basin to sort and selectively remove hatchery spring Chinook from wild fish spawning areas for ESA/HGMP compliance.  Interim management action until recent changes in hatchery smolt release strategies take full effect.

Also view and discuss the new fish sorting/handling facilities and intake structure at Sandy Hatchery funded by the City of Portland that facilitated the reintroduction of wild populations of coho and winter steelhead above the hatchery and allows selective passage

1:30 Depart Sandy Hatchery, travel to previous site of Bull Run Powerhouse
1:45 Bull Run River smolt acclimation pond

View and discuss the use of smolt acclimation in the Bull Run River as a long-term strategy to minimize the number of hatchery spring Chinook that migrate to primary wild fish spawning areas in the upper Sandy River basin.

1:00 Depart Bull Run Powerhouse site, travel to Dodge Park
2:20 Bull Run River resistance board weir/trap.

View an operating resistance board weir and discuss its use to collect and sort spring Chinook returning to the Bull Run River. Wild fish are passed upstream and hatchery fish are collected for Sandy Hatchery broodstock. Integral to the long-term strategy to provide spring Chinook for Sandy River fisheries.

The Commission meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m. September 2, 2016, and proceed chronologically through the agenda. If you wish to receive written materials prepared for any of the agenda items, please contact the Director’s Office in Salem at 503.947.6044 to request a packet for those items which interest you or see the agency’s website at https://www.dfw.state.or.us/agency/commission/minutes/.

A recess will be taken at 12:00 Noon, when the Commission will have lunch and may discuss matters of general interest. The public is welcome to attend, and an announcement will be made of the location of the lunch. Lunch will not be provided to the public.

PUBLIC TESTIMONY

If you wish to give testimony on any item scheduled on this agenda, please sign up on the sheets provided the day of the meeting. You will be called to testify by the Commission Chair. The Commission places great value on information received from the public, and wants to avoid arbitrary limits on the time or attention allocated to each witness. Therefore, persons desiring to testify or otherwise present information to the Commission are encouraged to:

1)  Provide written summaries of information to the Commission twenty (20 sets);
(2)  Limit testimony to three (3) minutes, recognizing that substance, not length, determines the value of testimony or written information;
(3)  Endorse rather than repeat testimony of other witnesses; and
(4)  Groups or organizations wishing to testify should designate one spokesperson whenever possible.
