Adults who need hunter education can now complete entire class online

March 6, 2015

SALEM, Ore.—Hunter education just got more convenient for adults needing the certification to hunt in other states. Adults (age 18 and over) are no longer required to complete a field day and can now take the Oregon course entirely online.

“Every year before fall hunting season, we get frantic calls from people going big game hunting in Colorado and other states who need to get certified in hunter education quickly, ,” said James Reed, ODFW hunter education coordinator. “We wanted to make their lives easier.”

In Oregon, hunter education is only required for hunters age 17 and under. Other states like Colorado require it for all adults born after a certain year, including adults from other states.

Youth students in Oregon can also take most of the class online, but need to attend a field day to complete their certification. During the field day, students demonstrate they can safely handle and shoot a firearm and safely cross an obstacle (such as a fence) with a firearm. (These topics are also covered in the online-only course.)

Adults new to hunting are still welcome to take the online course and the field day, or to take the entire course in a classroom setting. The hunter education class gives a thorough introduction to the skills hunters need, covering topics like firearms safety, hunter ethics, wildlife identification, hunt preparation and techniques and outdoor survival. (To see classes, visit ODFW’s License Sales Page and see View All Classes Workshops / Hunter Ed Class or Hunter Ed Field Day.)
