ASTORIA, Ore. – Recreational salmon fishing will close at the end of the day at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 in the ocean from Cape Falcon, Ore., to Leadbetter Point, Wash., under an in-season rule change approved today by NOAA Fisheries in consultation with fishery managers from Oregon and Washington.
The rule applies only in the ocean – not the Columbia River.
Fishery managers decided to close the ocean salmon season after reviewing harvest data that indicated recreational salmon fishermen are on track to catch their quota of 18,900 coho by Saturday night. Through Aug. 25, an estimated 17,460 coho had been landed, leaving an allocation of 1,440 coho. Weekday catches have been averaging 733 per day
